Sometimes we moms make things more complicated than they need to be. Especially, important things – like praying for our children.

Prayer, simply put, is just talking to God. Sharing your request and praising Him.  Talk to him like you would a friend.

Powerful Prayers Mothers Can Pray for Their Children

The most powerful prayers we can pray are based on Bible verses. Since all scripture is inspired by God ( 2 Timothy 3:16), when we pray using Bible verses we are actually praying using God’s Own words. The Bible has a treasure trove of powerful verses for you as a mom to use as you pray over your children’s lives.

As a godly mother, you want the best for your child. You want the Lord to bless them with safety and loving protection, good physical health, and good friends.

And although they may still be young children now, you want them to one day come to know the Lord as their Savior.

Three Reasons to Pray Using Bible Verses

Praying using Bible verses as a guide may be a new way for you to pray, so let’s first look at some reasons you should use them in your daily prayer life and how doing so makes a mother’s prayer, like yours, a very powerful tool.

1. The Word of God is powerful

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) tells us The Word of God is “living and powerful”. It was by His Words, that God created the universe and everything in it – that’s mighty powerful! (Genesis 1, John 1:1-3)

2. Scripture has been given to us as a gift to use

2 Peter 1 : 3-4 (NKJV), we see that God has, “given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” and He’s “given to us exceedingly great and precious promises”

Here, Peter is encouraging us, by telling us that everything we need for living a dynamic and godly life (which includes praying) has been given to us as a gift when the Lord gave us His precious and magnificent promises, which we find in the Bible.

3. Using Bible verses to pray gives us peace of mind because it ensures that we’re praying in accordance with God’s will.

As we pray using God’s own words as our guide, we can pray confidently knowing we are on the right path,  praying within His will.

Of course, we need to use wisdom.

We usually can’t claim verses that pertain to specific people. An obvious, example that would leave you disappointed, would be Matthew 1:21 (NKJV), “ And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

If you are concerned that you lack godly wisdom and need help in this area, you’ve got it! Start by claiming James 1:5 (NKJV), which assures us,” If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

How to Pray Using Bible Verses

To pray using Bible verses as a guide start by selecting a passage of scripture and make them personal by adding names and pronouns and making words the proper tense. You can put them into words that sound more natural to you but be sure to keep with the original intent of the verse.

Below you will find several examples to work with. If you haven’t started a prayer journal yet this may be the perfect time. You don’t need anything fancy, a simple notebook will do.

Bible Verses to Use as Prayers by Topic

Here are a couple examples of scripture-based prayers to get you started. These prayers are by topic and are based on combined scripture passages for each particular topic. 

Wisdom

Based on : James 1:5, Galatians 5:22-23, Proverbs 3:5-6, Ps 19:14

Dear Lord,

I pray You give (Carl) wisdom, knowledge, insight, and discernment in all areas of his life so that he can live a life pleasing to You in every way. So that his life is filled with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, and self-control. Renew his mind so that his thoughts are on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and are of good report; if there be any virtue or praise, let him think on those things.

Let him not be wise in his own eyes but understand what Your will is. Let the words of his mouth and the meditations of his heart be pleasing to You. In all his ways let him acknowledge You, so You will direct his paths.

I praise and thank you, Lord.

Good Friends

Based on Proverbs 27:17, I Thessalonians 5:22, Proverbs, 20:7

Dear Heavenly Father,

As iron sharpens iron, I pray You surround ( Susie ) with godly friends who will encourage her, Bless her with friends who will be a positive influence and who will encourage her to walk close to You, to be honest, kind, and to please You in all she does.

I thank you, Lord.

Salvation

Preschoolers may still be too young to fully grasp the concept of salvation but you can start praying.

Based on John 3:16, Proverbs 22:6

Dear Heavenly Father,

Your word says that You gave Your only Son for us when He died on the cross for our sins and that whoever believes on Him will be saved. Lord, I pray that your Holy Spirit will lead (Billy) to come to truly know you as his Lord and Savior. Put people and circumstances in his path that lead him to You. Help us as his parent to be a good example and guide us as we train (Billy) in the way he should go.

Preschoolers and Salvation

Christian parents are often anxious for their children to come to know the Lord and ask Him to be their Savior. I know I was. So, I was overjoyed when I was able to convince my almost 3-year-old to pray and ask Jesus to be her Savior!

She went to Sunday School and Missionettes and memorized numerous verses as a preschooler. (not to mention was homeschooled!)

Image my surprise (and my delight ) when at the age of 8 she came to her dad and I and told us, she knows we tell her she prayed and asked Jesus into her heart, but she doesn’t remember doing it. But now she wanted to pray and ask Jesus to forgive her and come into her life. We knew this was a sincere prayer, led by the Holy Spirit, and nothing she was coaxed into doing.

Shortly afterwards we started seeing such fruits of the Spirit developing in her life.

Looking back I realize children don’t remember too much during their preschool years. (if it weren’t for pictures and videos, how much would you remember?) They need to be old enough to look back and remember such an important incident like this for it to be sincere.

Future Adult Children

You may have young children now but keep the big picture in mind. I know it may seem a long way off now, but precious little children grow up to be precious adult children. It’s never too early to start praying for their future. Pray for your child’s future spouse and for the parents raising your child’s future spouse.  You can use the same scripture prayers you’re using for your own children.  I encourage you to search the scriptures and find verses to make your own. It will probably take some time (YIKES!!) and yes, a little work, but I am confident, this will be a real game changer (aka, a blessing!).
