Counting Books for Preschoolers

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin
Pete the Cat books are always a big hit. Children love him! In this fun story, Pete slowly loses one of his 4 buttons, until finally they’re all gone. Does he worry? Goodness no! This book covers simple counting 1-4, and introduces subtracting (4 buttons and he loses one – now he has 3 and so on down to zero)
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic counting book that has been a favorite with preschoolers for decades. This book has circle cutouts so children can count the holes in the hungry caterpillar’s food as he eats his way through the story. Not only is this a fun introduction to learning to count it’s also a great introduction to the life cycle of a butterfly for kids.

One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root
This is a story about a duck who gets stuck in the mud down by the marsh. Children can count the different marsh animal friends that come to try and help Duck get unstuck – 2 fish, 3 moose, 4 crickets, and so on, up to ten. Each set of animals shows up, making fun sound effects that children will enjoy.

The M&M’s Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath
This is a great hands-on book. Children can count out M&Ms from 1 -12 (how sweet – lol). This book also teaches sets, shapes, and simple subtraction. For those wanting a healthy version, the Cheerios Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath is similar

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow
This book is based on the preschool song by the same name – Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. No doubt your child will be singing right along as these mischievous monkeys help your little one learn to count.

Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood
This fun rhyming book is loaded with amazing illustrations. A school of 10 fish starts off on an underwater venture together, but one by one, each goes off on their own. It has a cute, unexpected ending. This also teaches counting down from ten,
Five Little Ducks by Raffi
This is another book based on a child’s favorite sing-along, by the same title – 5 Little Ducks by Raffi.

Ten Apple Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss
In this Dr. Seuss classic, three friends try to outdo each other to see who can get the most apples on their heads. When they each finally get 10, they run into some humorous challenges trying to keep the apples on their heads.

Ten Little Dinosaurs by Pattie Schnetzler
Ten Little Dinosaurs is a FUN book!! (One of my personal favorites!) This book is done in rhyming text, with long dinosaur names and a set of large swirly, wiggle eyes poking through on each page. This is a big hit with preschoolers!

Ten Little Ladybugs by Melanie Gerth
Ten Little Ladybugs is a cute interactive book for preschoolers. Children can touch each ladybug as they count along to the rhyming text. This is a great counting book for hands-on learners.
How to Count to ONE: (And Don’t Even THINK About Bigger Numbers!) by Caspar Salmon
This is a unique, silly counting book. The author tells the reader to just find the single item on each page so that they don’t have to count any higher …but preschoolers will love showing that they CAN count higher than 1 and on the last page are encouraged to count to 100.
123s of Art by Sabrina Hahn
This book uses famous pieces of artwork to explore counting items in each scene,
123 Count with Me by Tiger Tales
This book allows the child to trace each number as they count along.
