Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (KJV)
Exodus 20:11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (NIV)

DAY 1 – God Created Light

a bright colorful swirl of light

On the 1st day, God created light.

Genesis 1: 3-5 (KJV) tells us:

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

đź’«A quick science fact. White light is made up of colors â€“ all the colors of a rainbow. Therefore, when God created light he also created colors!

Activities

  • Go on a flashlight walk at night. Let your child shine the flashlight as everyone looks for familiar things around the yard.
  • Explore shadows.
    • Trace your child’s outline on the driveway or sidewalk and let them color it.
    • make shadow puppets on the wall.
    • use a flashlight to cast shadows of toys onto a wall

DAY 2 â€“ God Created the Sky

On the 2nd day, God created the sky. Genesis 1:6-8 (NIV) tells us:

And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

Activities

  • Lay outside and look at clouds
  • Read It Looks Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw
  • Introduce basic clouds and let your child try to identify them. Use the free cloud printable below as a guide.
3 basic clouds cumulus, cirrus, and stratus

DAY 3 – God Created Dry Land, Plants and Seas

On the 3rd day, God created dry land and the seas. Genesis 1:9-13 (NIV) tells us:

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.  God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

  • Take a trip to a beach or an aquarium.
  • Explore trees and plants.
  • Grow flowers.

Day 4 – God Created the Sun, Moon, and Stars

On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars. Genesis 1: 16 (NIV) tells us:

God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

đź’«Another fascinating science fact. Do you know if you were to look at the sun from space it would look white, not yellow?

And as we said earlier, white light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow so….drumroll, please… The sun being white light, is actually made up of all the colors in the rainbow!! – how cool is that?

You can actually help your child see this by having them shine sunlight through a prism. when they do sunlight will make a rainbow of colors.

Remind your little one we should never look directly at the sun.

Activities

  • explore reflexing sunlight through a prism
  • explore an outer space theme
  • let your child stick glow-in-the-dark stars on black construction paper and hang it on your child’s bedroom wall so they can see when the lights get turned out
  • when it gets dark at night sit outside and look up at the stars.

DAY 5 – God Created Fish and Birds

On the fifth day God created the fish and the birds. Genesis 1: 20 – 21 (NIV) says:

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Activities

Day 6 – God Created Animals and Man

On the sixth day God created animals and the He created man (Adam and Eve) Genesis 1: 24 (NIV) says:

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.

Then in Genesis 1: 26 – 27 (NIV) goes on to say:

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image,  in the image of God he created them;  male and female he created them.

Activities

  • Guess Which Animal Activity

Using animal photo cards, look at a picture and describe the animal you see. Give your child clues so they can guess what Adam named the animal you’re looking at.

– number of legs
– fur? feathers? scales? hair?
– size – tall, tiny, large?
– where they live – trees, farm, desert, underground, in a house as a pet
– what they eat
– how they move – fast, slow, crawls, flies, swims
– what color they may be

  • Guess Who Else God Created

Prep ahead – Set up a mirror inside a box so your child can’t see it.

Holding the box, tell your child, “God created something else.” You’re gonna be able to see what it is when you open the box but first I want you to try to guess.” Give them clues such as:

– God loves what you are going to see, way more than any of the animals.
God made this very special.
– Do you want to see who it is?”

Let them open the box and look inside to see themself in the mirror!

Day 7 – God Rested

On day 7 God rested. Not because he had to but because his work was completed. Genesis 2:2-3 (Amplified) says:

And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested (ceased) on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it [as His own, that is, set it apart as holy from other days], because in it He rested from all His work which He had created and done.
