Moses and Pharoah for Preschoolers
(You can find a free printable version of this story along with story cards at the end of this post. )
The Israelites were God’s special people. God had promised them a wonderful land to live in. But they couldn’t get to it. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, was making them stay in his land as slaves. They had to work hard all day long making bricks and doing anything else the pharaoh wanted them to do.
God wanted Pharaoh to let His people go. So he chose Moses and his brother Aaron to go to Pharaoh and tell him.
Pharaoh said, “No.” He was not gonna let the Israelites go.
God didn’t like that.
So God sent plagues to make Pharaoh change his mind.
Plagues were God’s way of punishing Pharaoh for not letting His people go.
God used different plagues to show pharaoh that He was The Boss, and that if he said, “Let My people go!” Pharaoh, better let them go!
One of the things God sent as a plague was frogs. Frogs were everywhere. In their houses, in their beds, in their ovens, and even on the people.
Pharaoh did not like the frogs everywhere. So he told Moses to ask God to take them away and then he would let the Israelites go. Just get rid of the frogs!
Moses asked Pharaoh,” When do you want me to pray and ask God to get rid of the frogs?
If frogs were everywhere in your bed, in your food, all over you, wouldn’t you want them gone right now?! You’re not gonna believe this – guess what Pharaoh said?
Pharaoh told Moses, “Tomorrow.” He didn’t want Moses to pray about the frogs today. He wanted him to pray tomorrow!
So the next day, Moses prayed to God, and God stopped all the frogs.
But when Pharaoh saw he didn’t have a problem with the frogs anymore, he changed his mind and would not let God’s people go.
So God sent more plagues. One of them was a swarm of flies. Flies were everywhere, just like the frogs had been.
Again, Pharoah called for Moses and asked him to pray and ask God to stop the flies, and then he’d let the Israelites go.
Moses told Pharaoh he would ask God to stop the flies but warned him that he better not be lying about letting God’s people go.
But when Pharaoh saw he didn’t have a problem with the flies anymore, he changed his mind again and would not let God’s people go.
God was not happy.
Another plague God sent was locust. Just like the frogs and flies had been, locust were everywhere. This time, there were so many locust that the people in Egypt couldn’t even see the sunlight anymore.
Again, the same thing happened. Pharaoh asked Moses to pray and promised to let the Israelites go, but like before, he was lying.
After 10 different kinds of plagues, Pharaoh had enough. He knew that God was too powerful and that he shouldn’t mess with Him.
And Pharoah finally let God’s people go.

Right after the wise men had left, God told Joseph in a dream, “Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt,” to protect Him from Herod. [Matthew 2:11-14] Do you think they may have used the Wise Men’s gifts to help pay for all their expenses to make the trip? Just a thought.
